Chayotes Curry

  • Chayote Squash(Chow Chow)-2
  • Oil-2 tbsp
  • Onion -2
  • Tomato -2
  • Green chilly -1
  • Bay leaf-1
  • Cinnamon -1 stick
  • Cumin seeds -1 tbsp
  • Ginger garlic paste -1 tbsp
  • Chilly powder -1 tsp
  • Turmeric powder -1 tsp
  • Coriander powder -2 tsp
  • Salt -as per taste
  • Chole masala powder -1/2 tbsp
  • Water -1 glass
  • Coriander leaves -for garnish

Chayote Squash Curry

In Tamil Nadu, South India, Chayote is known as Seemai Kathrikai/ Chow-Chow / Bangalore Kathrikai in Tamil and widely used in everyday cooking for recipes like “sambar”, “kootu”, “poriyal”, “thuvayal”, “chutney” and “mor-kulambu”. Chow-Chow is the common name used in the markets.

Method :

1) Peel the skin of Chayote.Dice it and put it in cooker with water, Salt and turmeric powder. Leave it for a whistle.
2) Make onion paste and tomato puree in mixer and keep aside.
3) Keep a pan on flame. Add oil.
4) Add bay leaf, Cinnamon stick, cumin seeds. Roast it till it leaves aroma.
5) Add onion paste, Green chilly, Ginger garlic paste, Salt and turmeric. Mix it till onion becomes golden brown.
6) Add chilly powder and coriander powder. Mix well and now pour the tomato puree.
7) When tomato is well cooked and leaves it’s raw smell, pour water and mix well. Leave it for boil.
8) Add boiled Chayote and chole masala into it. Mix well.
9) Garnish it with coriander leaves and serve hot with Indian breads like paranthas, naans, roti or even with puris.
