Spicy Puffed Rice

2-3 Servings ~ 10 Minutes
  • 2-3 Cups Puffed rice
  • 1 Big Onion - Finely Chopped
  • 5-6 Green Chillies - Finely Chopped
  • 3 Tbsp Fresh/frozen Grated Coconut
  • 1 Tsp Channa Dal
  • 1 Tsp Urad Dal
  • 1 Tbsp Peanuts
  • ¼ Tsp Mustard Seeds
  • 3-4 Curry leaves
  • A big Pinch Asafoetida
  • Salt to taste
  • ½ Tbsp Lemon juice
  • 2-3 Sticks of Coriander leaves - Finely Chopped
  • Oil 1 tbsp

Spiced Puffed Rice

Also called as Puri Usli or Madakki Usli/Uppittu. This was some thing that a neighbour near our Quarters home in bangalore used to make quite often for evening snacks. It could be made as a diet breakfast as well.

Remembered it and tried making this when the Puffed Rice I had bought here went soft.

Enjoy this quick dish either as an evening snack or diet breakfast.

Method:

– Wash the puffed rice in a colander and drain it well. Set it aside.
– Heat a wok. Add mustard seeds and allow spluttering.
– Add Oil and allow to heat.
– Add channa dal, urad dal and allow changing color.
– Then add asafoetida, curry leaves and stir fry till curry leaves become crisp.
– Add onion and chillies and stir fry till onions are translucent.
– Switch off flame and add in the grated coconut and coriander leaves.
– Mix in the drained puffed rice.
– Heat for 1-2 minutes on low flame.
– Serve hot.

  3. Always made Bhel puri of puffed rice. this is a nice variety for breakfast as well as evening snack. This will indeed keep in check our wait.But I suggest you use less oil to make this tasty recipe.

    • Hi Elsi, Thanks for your suggestion. Indeed this can keep our weight under control if we make this using minimal oil.
