Tomato Upma


1 cup – suji/ semolina/rawa
1/2 tsp – mustard seeds
1 to 2 tbsp each – Urad daal & Moong daal
1/4 tsp – Cumin powder
3 chopped green chilli
a spring of curry leaves
1/4 tsp – Turmeric powder
slit peanuts or cashewnuts 1 tbsp
1 cup – chopped tomatoes
2 cups – water (double of semolina)
1 to 2 tbsp – grated coconut
1/4 cup – chopped coriander for Garnish
3 to 4 tbsp – Oil
salt & sugar to taste


Dry Roast the semolina till light brown and set aside. Heat oil, add urad daal &/or moong daal and fry till light brown, add mustard, jeera/cumin, chilli pwd or chopped green chillies, curry leaves, turmeric power and slit peanuts or cashewnuts. Fry well then add the tomatoes, grated coconut, salt & sugar. Cook till tomatoes are done and then add the roasted semolina and mix well. Add water, let it boil then cover and simmer for 5-7 minutes or till the semolina completely absorbs the water. Garnish with chopped coriander & Serve hot.

  1. Hey, yummy…mouthwatering..reminded me of old days when my mom used to make this during my childhood. Love it anytime..Good to know that this is some body’s blog..the recipe is still alive.

  2. I have tried for my family quite many times and recently today morning. We all love it. The 1st 2 times it was a little mushy, as i waited for the tomatoes to cook before adding the rava. Now i don’t wait till the tomatoes are mushy before adding the rava. Thanks for sharing.
