Gujarati Khichdi

Ingredients:

1 cup of rice,soaked
1/2 cup of arhar dal/toovar dal,soaked
2 tbsp of ghee
1 tsp of cumin seeds
2 one-inch of cinnamon sticks
5 cloves
5-6 black peppercorns
a pinch of hing
3 medium onions,sliced.
2 tsp of ginger paste
2 tsp of garlic paste
3 green chillies,chopped
2 medium potatoes,quartered
salt to taste
1/2 tsp of turmeric powder
For seasoning:
2 tbsp of ghee

1/2 tsp of cumin seeds
1 large onion,sliced
4 garlic cloves,chopped

Method:

Heat 2 tbsp of ghee in a cooker.
Add cumin seeds,cinnamon,cloves,peppercorns & saute till fragrant.
Add hing,onions & saute for 2 minutes.
Add ginger paste,garlic paste,green chillies & saute for half a minute.
Stir in potatoes & salt.
Add rice,dal,turmeric powder & 3 1/2 cups of water & bring to boil.
Cover the lid & leave it for 2 whistles.
Heat ghee on a pan,add cumin seeds & saute till they begin to change colour.
Add onion & garlic & saute till golden in colour.
Pour the fried spices over the khichdi & mix well.
Serve it hot with masala papad.
