Shorshe Maach is a dish from Bengal.They prepare it in mustard oil.It gives a wonderful flavor to the dish.
3-4 tbsp of mustard oil
1 tbsp of mustard paste
salt to taste
1/2 tsp of turmeric powder
1/4 tsp of red chilli powder
1/4 tsp of mustard seeds
1 tsp of ginger garlic paste
1/2 tsp of chopped green chillies
1 tsp of lemon juice
2 bay leaves
1/2 tomato,finely chopped
1 finely chopped onion
1/2 tsp of saunf
3 medium pieces of fish (Boneless or with a single bone)
1/4 tsp of kalaunji(onion seeds)
1.Soak mustard seeds in water.
2.Add salt & a small piece of green chilli while grinding in order to avoid a bitter taste.
3.Add a little water in order to grind easily & get the right consistency of the paste.
1.Marinate the fish in salt,turmeric powder,red chilli powder & the juice of half lemon.
2.Heat mustard oil in a pan.Add mustard seeds,onion seeds,fennel seeds,ginger-garlic paste & chopped green chillies.
3.Add turmeric powder & red chilli powder & finely chopped onions & tomatoes.
4.Add bay leaves & saute.Allow it to cook on a low flame.
5.Sear the fish in mustard oil in another pan.
6.Mix the mustard paste with water in a cup & add to the gravy.Stir slowly.
7.Add another cup of water & bring to boil.
8.Transfer the semi cooked fish to the gravy.
9.Add salt & allow the gravy to cook till the fish is fully cooked.
10.Serve hot after adding the juice of half lemon.
